Bon was my form master in what turned out to be his last year at the school. I remember him as strict but fair teacher. Rumour had it that he was a Conscientious Objector in WW1, but I understood that he had been badly wounded in that conflict and was awarded a military decoration - either the MC or MM. This would have accounted for his pronounced limp. He encouraged us to bring in interesting newspaper cuttings which he put on a display board. I turned up one day with a picture of a WW2 fighter which had been placed on display outside the gates of an airfield. I was politely and firmly told "No military subjects please". It may be that it brought back too many bad memories for him and it may have been this attitude that gave the impression that he was at least a pacifist.
